Breed History

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a short herding breed that originated in Cardiganshire, Wales. It is one of the oldest British breeds and is the oldest of the two Corgi breeds. It gets the name Cardigan from its place of origin and corgi from the word "kergie", which is ancient Celtic for "dog". Unlike the Pembroke, these Corgis do have tails. They herd cattle by nipping at their heels and avoid being kicked thanks to their short little bodies. The Cardigan shares the same lines as the Dachshund and the Basset Hound, two breeds that share the short stubby leg characteristics.
