Breed History[]
The Catahoula Leopard Dog has a long history that starts with the first domesticated animal in North America when Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto landed in Florida and traveled along the Southeastern part of the United States. He noted that these dogs looked like wolves but barked like dogs and were used by the Native Americans. The explorers had brought their own dogs, including mastiffs, bloodhounds, and greyhounds, and crossbred these wolf-like dogs with theirs. The Native Americans of Louisiana called these crossbred dogs “wolf-dogs”, and they were bred once again with hounds brought by French explorers. This final crossbreeding would result in what we know of as the Catahoula Leopard Dog. They are a unique working breed that will create a “canine fence” around the herd of livestock. Within the fence, the dogs’ master would direct the herd. To Catahoula Leopard Dog breeder, it is not appearance that is important but this “canine fence” instinct and work ethic that makes a dog truly a part of the breed. They have been used in Venezuela to gather wild Brahman cattle, and in Canada, they are surprisingly successful in sled dog racing.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog was added to the Wasabi Dog Sim gameplay officially on June 5th, 2021 during the alpha testing Summer 2021 party. This breed was sponsored by player Noble Sea Cow. The breed has 59 (plus bicolor eye varieties) standard breed colors in the game with currently 2 color-modifying sushi. Within the game, the breed is considered a Herding breed group and can thus enter competitions listed as Herding-group only.
