Breed History[]
The Dalmatian is a well-known breed for starring in the iconic Disney movie “101 Dalmatians” and being used as a mascot for firehouses. The Dalmatian has an obscure origin that has led breed historians to believing this breed originated from a region along the Adriatic Sea that was once known as Dalmatia. This would now be present-day Croatia. Dalmatians were used as coach dogs, dogs that assisted horse-drawn carriages and protected the horses and passengers. Romani people used Dalmatians to protect their caravans as they traveled across Europe which may have aided in the difficulty in pinpointing where this breed came from.
Being a coach dog is also how the Dalmatian became the mascot of firehouses. Before fire departments were paid for by cities and tax dollars, they competed with one another. Whoever put out the fire first got the money from the insurance. The Dalmatians were used to guard the horse-drawn carriages while also nipping at competing fire departments’ horses heels to slow them down, giving their fire departments an advantage to get to the fire first. Dalmatians aren’t used as often on the field when it comes to fire fighting since we no longer use horse-drawn carriages, but they still have many jobs that assist with. They hunt vermin the fire houses, act as a mascot for the fire departments, and assist in sniffing out accelerants to aid police in arson cases.
