Breed History[]
The Netherlandse Kooikerhondje, Kooikerhondje, or “Kooiker” is an old Dutch breed and can be seen in paintings a Dutch masters from the late Middle Ages. It is believed to be an ancestor of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The breed was used in manmade duck trapping ponds called “Eendenkoi”. These were used before guns became a popular tool for duck hunting. This makes the Kooikerhondje the only sporting breed the works in front of the game they are hunting. The Kooikerhondje was commonly associated with Prince William of Oranje’s Kooiker, Kuntz. It is said that Kuntz saved the prince from assassins who were attempting to take his life. The breed’s numbers began to dwindle during the First World War due to better fowling guns. The use of the eendenkoi or duck decoys were not as useful anymore, so the use of the duck-luring breed began to go down. It was brought back when Baronesse von Hardenbroek van Ammerstol who gave a peddler a photo of the dog and a snippet of fur to help track one down. The first litter to be recorded in the United States was in 1999. Now, these dogs are also used in search and rescues and as service dogs.
