Breed History[]
The Tanuki, or Japanese racoon dog, is a candid species that is native to only Japan. It is in the Nyctereutus genus, which only has two species in it. The other species with this same genus is the common raccoon dog. The Tanuki is a mainly nocturnal species. While they are a candid species, they have a few similarities to cats. The way they vocalize using groans and growling resembles that of a cat, and they arch their backs to seem more intimidating to predators. They also have similar behaviors to candid species though, such as lowering their bodies and showing their bellies as a defense tactic. The Tanuki’s social groups are mainly comprised of a breeding pair, but it is not unusual for them to form a group with non-paired Tanukis until a mate is found. The Tanuki holds a predominant part in Japanese folklore and is often seen in popular Japanese culture, such as Super Mario and Animal Crossing. They are portrayed as being mischievous and masters of disguise while also being a bit gullible and absentminded. The Tanuki’s conservation status is currently at “least concern”.
Breed In Wasabi (SPOILERS)[]
The Tanuki was added to the Wasabi Dog Sim gameplay officially on November 1st, 2021 during alpha testing. The breed has 11 standard breed colors in the game with currently 2 color-modifying sushi. Within the game, the breed is considered a Wild group breed and can thus enter competitions listed as Wild-group only.
The Tanuki is a purchasable-only breed, which requires a breed permit purchased from the Premium Shop for real money or SuperBones, a paid-for game currency. The permit allows players to adopt, breed, and sale/buy Tanuki year-round to other players with the Tanuki permit too. Without a breed permit, you cannot adopt or buy Tanuki. Permits for the Tanuki can only be purchased during the month of November.
SPOILERS BEGIN HERE:
The Tanuki is adopted from the pet shop with extra genetic potential skill points in each skill, making them more likely to achieve excellent offspring sooner in gameplay.
The Tanuki also has special random events for their breed only, as well as a mechanism in the Park where they refuse to visit the Fox Shrine because foxes are their rivals. During these special random events, your Tanuki will tell you riddles, bring you more money finding events, and in general, create chaos - like teleporting you to different locations. (Do not worry - you can opt out of the teleporting random event should you choose to ruining the Tanuki's fun.)
They have a fun and unique personality that shines through during these events, but bring the player the benefit of finding more money around the game world. This can be extremely helpful when you are broke. Just add the Tanuki as your active pet and explore the site with them, in hopes of stumbling upon some extra cash!
